Tracking the Day
So far, I'm pretty aware of why I smoke. Breaking it down into each individual cigarette just makes it clearer. Reason 1: It's an escape. I don't have a way to "get away" from things. My husband has an office in the house, an office in town, and his parents' house. My daughter has her own room. I don't have anywhere to go to "relax" and gather my thoughts. My thoughts are continuously interrupted by sensory overload - constant input from family and animals. The only way to "escape" is to go outside and smoke. Sometimes, that doesn't even work. Reason 2: Boredom. My husband works almost 7 days a week. I can't afford to go anywhere. I can't do anything that doesn't include my daughter, because there is no support. I'm stuck here. The highlight of my day generally includes cleaning, playing on the computer, and television. Reason 3: Avoidance. The majority of my life is boring and I don't really do anything enjoyable. Economics has taught us that trade is more efficient and beneficial when parties specialise and seek economies of scale. We can all agree that this is a very simple and useful model to go by. The more attention we focus on a certain area, the quicker we'll be able to reach our maximum potential. But I've been wondering...when is the right time to seek and pursue a specialisation?... to work much harder towards our potential? I suppose it would have been during high school in which we were supposed to release our passions and establish - what I so truly seek - a satisfying & rewarding career path. Having to pick a degree to take up at university - forces you, or at least pushes you to specialise in an area - and pretty much acts as a chainsaw does to the branches of the tree of choices. Realistically, there IS time to change degree and to focus on a totally different area of study. But how much time must be used up wandering almost aimlessly below potential?... (more)
